Chapter 28

“Where will you go?” Phigby asks, motioning toward the trader-sized boats that bob in the gentle swell of the natural harbor. It has taken us two days to sort things out, reunite the former slaves with their own families, gather what few belongings they had. Now, they, along with the Orsini family, with what possessions they could carry, wait on the beach.

Kella turns and motions toward the several groups that line the seashore, preparing to row out to their waiting vessels. “I’ve made it clear to our former, uh—”

“Fellow workers,” Amil interrupts in a dry voice.

Kella nods, a grim smile cracking his face. “That they can’t stay here, so most likely they’ll sail northward, seek a new home.”

“And your family?” Alonya asks.

Kella’s eyes turn sad, remorseful. He gestures over to one group where Laci and Lorn stand talking alongside those who had stood against the Revered Mother. “They will sail east, back to our ancestral homestead.”

“Please, don’t tell me,” Cara pleads, “that they’re going back to your family’s old ways.”

Kella shakes his head, a wan smile that barely curls his lips. “No. We’ve agreed that we’ve brought enough evil into the world. No, they’re going to have to learn to work with their hands. Earn their daily bread the hard way.”

“And the others?” Phigby asks pointedly, jutting his chin toward the larger group of Orsinis, among them Kella’s father and the Bandri, who still wear their white robes as if in denial of what’s happened.

Kella runs a tongue over dry lips, his gaze upon his father and those who stand silent and disgruntled with him. “We know of a small land, some distance east of here. It’s uninhabited. It appears that we’re going to learn to be fisherfolk.”

“You’re not going with Laci and the others back to your homeland?” Marce questions, her voice marked by surprise.

“No,” Kella answers and gestures toward his father. “He’s going to need help. He’s not used to working for a living, not having servants around at his every beck and call.”

He smiles slightly. “Maybe we’ll learn how to be farmers too. We do have a little experience in that, you know.”

“Uh huh,” Amil growls, “just keep away from bees and their nectar.”

Kella smiles a bit wider. “Rest assured, Amil, we’ll only use them to pollinate our fruits and such.”

“Speaking of bees,” Tavin says, “what about those giant bees and your Vakts? What happened to them?”

“We set them free,” Kella answers and then frowns. “I only hope they understood that they can’t stay here.”

“Don’t worry,” Pim returns, and gives me a little wink as she rests a hand upon Silky. “They understood. They’ve already left the island.”

“To go where?” Alonya questions.

“I wouldn’t know,” Kella answers. “They weren’t native to this land. Like the fisher folk, we made slaves of them, too.”

“That’s unfortunate,” Phigby rumbles, “they were incredible creatures. Someday, when this is over, I would like to study them.”

Kella shakes his head. “Sorry, as I said, I don’t know where they came from or where they went.
